A great primer for aspiring linkbaiters Bryan. As for the mixed connotations of linkbaiting I liken them to the mixed feelings consumers have about the word marketing or the phrase "email offers." It all depends on the actors and their delivery. Send out too many irrelevant email offers to a list and you're a spammer. Too much bait-and-switch and you're a flaky marketer. But grab people's attention and direct them to compelling content that they find enjoyable and/or relevant and you're a hero.

I've been using a linkbait title for a chunk of content about search campaigns that fail post-click. My first was "The Turducken Disconnect: An SEM Fable for the Holidays" and I think that worked because the title was somewhat self-selecting: If you're interested in SEM you may click and if so you will find relevant content, but if you're a foodie, you probably won't click (even if you do, I tried to keep the presentation amusing). Anyway, I've just posted the latest iteration as "The Turducken Disconnect Revisited: Some sites wise up, others not so much" ( http://monetate.com/blog/?p=1179). I will let you know how it plays.
